TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Review

It was the best of cards, it was the worst of cards. It was the spring of hope for an excellent promotion, it was the winter of despair when said promotion was rolled back. As a credit card writer and aficionado, this credit card is the fiery, passionate roller coaster of a relationship, making you feel so alive and young and fiercely happy but, at the same time, fearful about the inevitable crushing end.

$60,000 | $100,000

Simply because the folks at TD Aeroplan will roll out excellent promotions which slash the annual fee and bump up the welcome point amount and make the card arguably the best in the market, and then slash the welcome points and bump up the annual fee making the card…less good. Lucky for you, you are able to pick exactly when to enroll; It is up to us to keep up and save you the heartbreak.

Joking aside, we should note that regardless of timing, card customers enjoy some of the top travel benefits available for any card with an annual price tag less than $400.  Want to do some comparison shopping?  Check out our listing of all the best Aeroplan credit cards.

So right now? This card is solidly good. They fall short of excellent because the annual fee is $120. That is compensated for by a 15,000 Aeroplan point signup bonus – and you can get an additional 5,000 if you add a family member. There are alternatives that offer up to 25,000 with no annual fee – however, these cards have large spending requirements that delay the release of points for three months. And so – there is no Aeroplan card in the market that offers a quicker way to pick up a massive number of points than this here TD Visa Infinite card.

In our opinion, the most important aspect of a travel card is the insurance offered to holders. Basically, if a card does not offer good travel insurance, it renders the card basically unusable for travel-associated purchases like tickets, rental cars, etc. The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite offers the best insurance protection of any mid-ranged fee card in the market, with $100s of dollars in equivalent value insurance offered as a free service for card users.

Emergency Medical Insurance Up to $1M for you, spouse and children for 21 consecutive days abroad. For 65+, four days consecutive. No need to use the card to pay for the trip.
Trip Cancellation Kid get a last minute ear infection? Pregnancy render you or your wife unable to fly, doctor’s orders? If you bought your tickets with the TD infinite, you are covered up to $1,500 per person/$5,000 per group against non-refundable expenses.
Trip Interruption Heaven forbid an injury or death to someone at home or on trip requires immediate return; TD’s got your expenses covered at $5,000 a person up to $25,000 total. Card usage required.
Rental Theft and Damage Use your card or points and you are covered up to 48 days consecutively against collision and theft of your rental car.
Lost or Delayed Baggage If your bags are delayed more than six hours, you’ve got a maximum $1,000 per group to spend on essentials such as clothing, etc. Card usage required.
Trip Delay If you are delayed more than four hours each member is covered up to $500 for hotel stays and food. Card usage required.

Bits and Bobs

There are a number of really great perks offered on this card, due to partnerships both from TD Canada and the Visa Infinite line.

Preferred car rental rates – Avis and Budget offer up to 25% discounts on rentals in the USA or Canada.
Guaranteed hotel reservation – never lose your room, even if you arrive late.
Hotel and dining experiences – Access some of the most exclusive and special hotels in the world with visa infinite and enjoy nice little spoilers like food and drink vouchers and late checkout. Visa Infinite also offers some beautiful and exclusive behind-the-scenes dining experiences with top chefs, and wine tastings at dozens of wineries.

Closing Balance

Regardless of your enrollment timing, you will not get more points quicker than with the TD Aeroplan Infinite Visa. More importantly, though perhaps offering less instant gratification, the TD Infinite Aeroplan travel insurance package offers market-leading value and comprehensiveness. Trip Cancellation is a rarity and extremely appreciated when needed (I’ve used it once, saved me a small fortune), and twenty-one days consecutive medical insurance is uncommonly long. Shopping is protected with extended warranty and insurance, you get spoiled by Air Canada, and there are a number of exclusive experiences offered for card holders.

Yes, the earn rate is lower than some competition, but insurance coverage on travel and purchases make the card universally usable. (who cares that you received 2 points instead of 1.5 when the 1.5 offers comprehensive travel and rental insurance and the 2 points doesn’t?)
